Preparation for Work, Life and Learning

Our courses prepare you for independent living, work or further study.

About Preparation for Work, Life and Learning

CAVC’s Preparation for Work, Life and Learning courses offer bespoke provision enabling young people to overcome barriers to support their chosen future progression routes. There are three routes, each focused on developing the skills and qualities needed to prepare students for Work, Life and Learning.

Preparation for Work: Work Skills courses are for young people who are working towards either supported or independent employment. Learners will participate in a range of classroom-based lessons, practical group projects and work placements, both within the College and with local employers. This diverse approach equips our learners with the skills and knowledge they need to become confident and successful employees, who are well prepared for the jobs market.

Preparation for Life: Life Skills courses are our Personalised Learning Courses, for young people who are working towards an independent, happy and active life after college. Our Personalised Learning courses give learners the flexibility to focus on areas of development that are personal to them. Learners will be supported to create their own learning plans, based on their individual interests and aspirations. Projects are specifically designed to facilitate opportunities for learners to develop skills in a range of areas by providing meaningful learning experiences, encouraging selfadvocacy and promoting independence.

Preparation for Learning: Vocational Access courses include a range of practical and classroom activities to develop the skills, qualities and experiences for learners to be able to study at a higher level. As well as continuing to build on their Maths and English skills, students complete core projects that develop independent work and study skills and take part in person centred tutorial sessions. Learners build their own curriculum by picking two options from a range of Vocational Pathways including Catering, Health and Social Care, Sport, Public Services, Media, Art, IT, Building Trades, Hair and Barbering, Beauty, Customer Service, Business, Plumbing and Electrical, Performing Arts, Mechanics and Music. After completing the course Vocational Access learners are equipped with a range of skills, confident to make appropriate choices for their next steps.

We also offer courses designed to provide a more gradual introduction to college life. For example, our Skills for Progression courses offer learners a more streamlined timetable, with less movement around the college campuses, smaller class sizes and space in the curriculum to address personal barriers to progression, acting as a stepping stone into further education.
