Ieuan Jones, Head of Basketball at Cardiff and Vale College, has been chosen as an Assistant Coach to Great Britain’s U18 Men’s Basketball team.
The selection was made ahead of the FIBA Youth Eurobasket tournament, which will take place in the summer. The first Team GB U18 selection camp will taking place soon, and three CAVC Basketball Academy players - Onanefe Atufe, Luca Basini-James and Panos Nikalaidis – have been nominated.
CAVC Head of Basketball Ieuan Jones said: "I am delighted to be appointed as an Assistant Coach for the Great Britain U18 men. It is a huge honour and means a lot to me on a personal level. I am proud to represent the College and our Academy on the international stage.”
Since Ieuan started at CAVC, the Basketball Academy entered the Colleges Wales Sport Basketball Championships for the first time and won. It has since gone on to win the Championship for four years consecutively and last year made history by becoming the first ever Welsh college to win the Association of Colleges Basketball Championship.
Cardiff and Vale College Senior Head of Sport, Tourism and Public Services said: “Congratulations to Ieuan on this extremely well-deserved appointment!
“Ieuan is a real asset to the College, our Academy and to basketball in the region. He will do a fantastic job helping coach the Great Britain U18 Men’s team.”
The CAVC Basketball Academy is made up of students from across the College who are studying a range of vocational and academic courses. The Academy provides a supportive and specialist environment that combines first-class coaching and sports facilities with the College’s wide portfolio of courses. Players can progress in their sporting careers while studying at the College and prepare for a future outside of sport as well.
