Cardiff and Vale College learner and Basketball Academy Player, Onanefe Atufe, is the first Welshman to be selected to represent Great Britain in eight years.

Fresh from winning ‘Defensive Player of the Year’ at the CAVC Sports Awards, this weekend Onanefe Atufe was selected to represent the Great Britain Under 18 Basketball squad, competing against France, Germany and China in preparation games ahead of the European Championships.

Head of Basketball, Ieuan Jones, said: “This is a huge achievement for our college, basketball academy and for Basketball in Wales. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is Onanefe has just completed his second full season of basketball. Well done Nefe, we are extremely proud of you!”

The European Championships will be taking place at the end of July, with Onanefe being the first person in Wales to be selected to represent Great Britain since 2006.

Onanefe’s selection tops off a fantastic year for the CAVC Basketball Academy which saw them win their third AoC Welsh League Championship title in a row, and also emerge victorious as the first Welsh team to claim the UK-wide Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport Championships title
