About this course
This qualification is for those involved in the commissioning, installation, servicing and maintenance of refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems and support the skills necessary for employment/progression in this ever growing sector as users demand more environmentally friendly systems.
This course will provide you with the knowledge and practical skills required for the safe handling of flammable hydrocarbon refrigerants (R600a/ R290 etc) while maintaining, servicing, installing and disposing.
This FREE course is only available to adults that are eligible for a Personal Learning Account (PLA). Personal Learning Accounts, funded by the Welsh Government, are available to employed adults living in Wales that wish to develop skills to progress or change career.

What you will study
There are nine mandatory learning outcomes that will be studied and assessed:
- Specific health and safety requirements which apply to the installation, servicing and maintaining and decommissioning of hydrocarbon RAC systems.
- Legislative and organisational procedures for installation, servicing and maintaining and de-commissioning of hydrocarbon RAC systems.
- Differences between halocarbon and hydrocarbon RAC systems.
- Procedures for planning and preparing for work on hydrocarbon RAC systems.
- Be able to plan and prepare for work on hydrocarbon RAC
- systems
- Specific requirements for installing and testing hydrocarbon RAC systems.
- Differences between halocarbon and hydrocarbon service and maintenance procedures.
- Be able to service and maintain hydrocarbon RAC systems.
- Decommissioning procedures for hydrocarbon RAC systems
You will be taught with a mixture of classroom based theory and the practical elements of the course in a specialist RAC workshop.
Assessment consists of a multiple-choice question paper and a practical assessment.

Entry requirements
It is recommended that candidates are experienced engineers who work on systems containing hydrocarbon and flammable refrigerants. You must be experienced in working with refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. Candidates should be F-Gas certified before enrolling on this qualification. Copies of F-Gas certification should be made available to the centre before attendance.
