This Music Theory course offers a structured framework for musicians to develop a broad range of musical skills and gain internationally recognised qualifications . This course is also suitable for learners who wish to study for fun, helping to deepen understanding and add enjoyment and enhance creativity. The course is focussed around The Associated Board of the Royal School of Music Grades 1-5 and covers essential building blocks of music. As part of this course you will learn about simple and compound notation, time signatures (standard and irregular), major and minor scales, key signatures, intervals, modes, chords and their inversions, cadences and transposition. As internationally recognised qualifications, these grades offer a pre-requisite for further or higher practical study and offer a desirable element in entry criteria for music related courses. Please Note: Exams are not mandatory.
Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Grades 1-5. Covering areas such as note durations, time and key signatures, major and minor scales, modes, triads and chord inversions, cadences and transposition. PLEASE NOTE: Music Theory Exams are certified however, they are not mandatory for this course.
Applicants should have basic music skills and should also be interested in developing their practical skills alongside study.
Cardiff and Vale College has excellent music facilities. This course will be based in the Music room which is fully equipped with all the necessary equipment you will need for this course. Other specialist spaces include music performance rooms and music production facilities.
Learners who successfully complete this course could look at exploring our other Part Time courses, which include: ABRSM Grades 6-8 and performance workshops. Learners could also look to progress onto our Full Time courses that include: L2 and L3 Music Performance or Music Production courses.
