The GCSE in Welsh Second language is an intensive one-year course. In this course students will develop a deeper understanding of Welsh language, culture and society while developing overall competence in communication and grammar in Welsh.
Students will practise the four language skills of reading, speaking, listening and writing and are encouraged to use the target language wherever possible.
Although the course is suitable for beginners, previous study of another foreign language is recommended.
The aim of the course is to prepare students to sit the WJEC Welsh Second-Language GCSE Assessment; to develop the learner’s language skills, foster critical thinking, collaboration, and cultural awareness; enabling candidates to communicate and interact confidently.
Please note - this course is not suitable for anyone who has studied Welsh as a first language.
The content for learning GCSE Welsh Second Language is organised under three broad themes:
• Employment
• Wales and the World
• Youth
Learners will be awarded the qualification based on performance in both Non-Examination Assessments and Written Examinations
Non-Examination Assessments: Unit 1: 25% of the qualification: Speaking (10%) Listening (15%)
• Oracy response to visual stimulus Non-examination assessment. A task for a pair/ group of three based on visual stimuli provided by WJEC to stimulate discussion.
Unit 2: 25% of the qualification: Speaking (20%) Listening (5%)
• Communicating with other people Non-examination assessment.
• A discussion in pairs/groups of three based on triggers such as a combination of graphs, pictures and short reading texts provided by WJEC.
Written Examination:
Unit 3: 25% of the qualification: Reading (15%) Writing (10%)
• Narrative, specific and instructional Written examination: Reading tasks with non-verbal and written responses, including one translation task from English to Welsh and one proof reading task and writing tasks
Unit 4: 25% of the qualification: Reading (10%) Writing (15%)
• Descriptive, creative and imaginative written examination. Reading tasks with non-verbal and written responses and writing tasks.

There are no formal entry requirements for adult learners, but previous study of Welsh (as a second language) or another foreign language is recommended. This could include study of a foreign language at KS3, private study at home or with a tutor, or consistent use of an online or digital tool such as a language app. Students who have studied the Welsh Programme of Study as a First-Language are not permitted to take the GCSE Second-Language Welsh exam. All class communication outside of the lesson will be conducted through Microsoft TEAMS. You will also need to use a computer to complete coursework. Therefore, some knowledge and/or experience of Microsoft Office will be an advantage. Full-time students should have a minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade D.
