The Italian GCSE is an intensive one-year course for students who wish to develop a deeper understanding of Italian society, language and culture. It is aimed at students who already have some knowledge of the language. Students will practise the four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, as well as several grammar tenses, and will be encouraged to use the target language wherever possible.
Although the course is suitable for beginners, previous study of Italian or another foreign language is recommended.
The aim of the course is to prepare students to sit the WJEC Italian GCSE Assessment, and to act as preparation for anyone wishing to continue their studies at A Level.
The syllabus consists of four papers, divided into two levels: Foundation (equal to grades 1-5) and Higher (4-9). The grading is based upon the new GCSE in England, since GCSE Italian is not offered by the Welsh Exam Board.
The papers are:
Paper 1 - Listening (25%), Written examination.
Paper 2 - Speaking (25%), Internally conducted and externally assessed.
Paper 3 - Reading (25%), Written examination.
Paper 4 - Writing (25%), Written examination.
The papers cover the following topic areas:

5. International and global dimension
The main textbook will be Contatti by Checketts and Freeth and published by Hodder and Stoughton

There are no formal entry requirements for adult learners, but previous study of Italian or another foreign language is necessary. This could include study of a foreign language at KS3, private study at home or with a tutor or consistent use of an online or digital tool such as a language app. All class communication outside of the lesson will be conducted through Microsoft TEAMS. You will also need to use a computer to complete coursework. Therefore, some knowledge and/or experience of Microsoft Office will be an advantage. Full-time students should have a minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade D.
