The AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Award in Bookkeeping is an entry-level bookkeeping qualification, suitable for anyone looking for a taster or introduction to basic bookkeeping principles and develop practical and transferable skills to help progress or change career. This qualification will particularly suit those students who have had minimal work experience or those who need some additional support in order to progress. It may also interest those who are self-employed or working in small businesses who wish to do their own bookkeeping.
Students will learn about the key roles that a bookkeeper undertakes and learn the underpinning theory of the fundamental concept for double-entry bookkeeping, including how to identify assets, liabilities, income, expenses and capital. This is a very practical course and topics studied include: the role of the bookkeeper; understanding financial transactions; processing customer and supplier transactions; processing receipts and payments, including preparation for bank reconciliation.

There will be potential for progression onto the AAT L2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting or L2 Certificate in Bookkeeping. In order to be able to successfully progress to the Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping or the Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting, it is recommended that students also have a GCSE Grade C or equivalent in both English and Maths. The skills developed by studying this qualification will give students a solid base from which to seek employment with greater confidence or enable them to progress to the next level of learning. Such skills developed in this qualification can lead to employment in junior or supporting administrative roles in companies across a wide range of sectors, for example, as a:
