Apprenticeship in Heating and Ventilation

About the Course:

The Heating & Ventilating Craftsperson Apprenticeship is the approved Welsh Apprenticeship Framework for those working in the Building Services Engineering (BSE) sector in Wales. It prepares apprentices to work safely and competently on heating and ventilation systems within industrial, commercial, and large residential environments.

The programme builds occupational competence aligned to National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Heating & Ventilation. Apprentices develop skills in:
Installing, maintaining, commissioning, and testing heating and ventilating systems.
Working with ductwork, pipework, ventilation plant, and air-moving systems.
Applying industry safety standards, including safety-critical tasks.
Understanding the wider BSE sector and its practices in Wales (core units).
The qualification is designed to be portable across the UK and meet the demands of modern building services environments.

Routes:

Occupational Competence Qualification
The EAL Level 3 BSE – Heating & Ventilating Craftsperson Qualification must be achieved within the apprenticeship.
Assessed through practical tasks, a safety-critical test, and an employer-set project.
Technical Knowledge Qualification
Covers underpinning theory of heating, ventilation, and BSE systems. The Heating and Ventilation Apprenticeship also requires the apprentice to complete the following additional courses: Water Regulation, Heat Pumps, Unvented Hot Water, Rainwater Harvesting and Gas Awareness.
*Essential Communication Skills Level 2 / *Esssential Application of Number Skills Level 2 / *Essential Digital Literacy Skills Level 2 - Applicable if proxies are not available

Entry Requirements:

This Apprenticeship is suitable for learners who:
are aged 16+ currently working in the trade area
have passed all relevant sector specific entry assessment (where appropriate)
have achieved one or more of the following (or recognised equivalent):
Foundation in Construction and the Built Environment qualification at Level 2
Progression in Building Services Engineering qualification at Level 2*
Welsh Baccalaureate National Diploma
GCSE grade A-C in each of the following:- a communication subject, maths and either a science or technical-based subject (e.g. Design & Technology, Electronics etc)
GCSE grade A-C in WJEC GCSE Built Environment
Level 2 'Access to Building Services Engineering' qualification and/or equivalent qualifications*

This qualification may be considered as a proxy for the Foundation and Core qualifications during the transition period which runs until 2023.

Important Points:

You must be: Employed for 16 hours or more each week in a suitable role
You must be: Living in Wales or Working 51% of your contract in Wales
You must be: Aged 16 or over
