Cardiff and Vale College, in partnership with WEPCO, has launched the pre-planning application consultation process for two new campuses in the Vale of Glamorgan.
The Welsh Government approved the College’s Outline Business Case for the £100m investment in education and training in the Vale in the summer of last year. Now CAVC, in partnership with WEPCO, will consult on its plans before submitting a planning application for the campuses.
The College is working with the Welsh Government and Vale of Glamorgan Council on the plans, which will replace CAVC’s current Barry Campus with a new campus on Barry Waterfront and an Advanced Technology Centre at Cardiff Airport.
The 6,000sqm Barry Waterfront campus could accommodate nearly 900 learners and more than 200 staff at any time. As well as classrooms and a wellbeing gym, plans include active street frontages open to the public for the Hair and Beauty and Hospitality and Catering.

Based by CAVC’s renowned International Centre for Aerospace Training (ICAT) at Cardiff Airport, which will continue to operate, the planned 13,000sqm Advanced Technology Centre will accommodate nearly 2,000 learners and 215 staff. As well as classroom space and labs, the plans feature workshops for building services, green technologies, construction, engineering and automotive, including electric vehicles with a higher Education Business and Learning and Skills Centre.

Cardiff and Vale College Chief Executive Mike James said: “We are delighted to open consultation on our plans for this major £100m investment project in education and training for the Vale of Glamorgan, which will have real significance for the economy of the wider region and beyond.
“The Advanced Technology Centre will have regional and national importance, delivering high-level skills to support the development and diversification of the future and existing workforce for many employers from across Wales. It is with real pleasure that I can say that we are delivering on our commitment to provide first-class teaching and learning environments for learners and the community in the Vale of Glamorgan.”
