Cardiff and Vale College HND in Hospitality Management learner Ruby Pile has been putting in some practice for when she represents Wales and the UK at WorldSkills Lyon 2024 with a week’s work experience at the Ritz.
During her week at the legendary luxury five star hotel in London, Ruby worked many shifts including breakfast, lunch, dinner, afternoon tea and the bar.
“I really enjoyed the Ritz experience – it was amazing,” Ruby, who also works at the prestigious Lucknam Park hotel as a chef de rang in Restaurant Hywel Jones alongside her studies, said. “I enjoyed learning new skills, the styles of services and meeting such skilled professionals the most during my time at the Ritz.”
Ruby’s work experience at the Ritz was organised by her WorldSkills UK training manager and Inspiring Skills. It forms part of her training for the international finals of WorldSkills, also known as ‘the Skills Olympics’, where she will be competing for Team UK in the Restaurant Service category.
“I believe the experience will help me prepare for WorldSkills Lyon as there were a lot of elements throughout the services that are needed for high marks in the competition,” Ruby said. “it was great to get some advice and tips from professionals in this environment.”
Cardiff and Vale College Principal Sharon James-Evans said: “Congratulations to Ruby for this wonderful experience – there’s not many Hospitality learners who can say they’ve worked at one of the most famous hotels in the world! Ruby’s talents have shone throughout her time with us at CAVC; the amount of skills competitions she’s won accolades in speaks for itself and we all wish her the very best of luck for WorldSkills Lyon 2024.”
