Our Work and Life courses are for young people who are continuing to build skills to live happy and independent lives in their local community whilst exploring and developing skills for employability.
Throughout the academic year, learners will participate in a variety of sessions, in the classroom, their local community and in onsite and offsite work-based training facilities. Our approach to the curriculum is always learner-led, with learners dictating the pace of progression through these activities. All learning activities aim to facilitate skill development in the following areas.
· Employability
· Community
· Independent living skills
· Health and wellbeing.
Essential skills (maths and English) will be embedded into these areas and all courses are designed to focus on developing communication skills and self-advocacy. This is a non-accredited course, allowing learners the opportunity to build skills, knowledge and confidence. Learners will have personalised learning goals based on their long-term aspirations.
You will want to be on a course in order to develop skills for Independent living as well as exploring skills related to employability. You will need to attend an experience day and informal interview before being accepted onto the course.
These courses are designed to build skills to prepare learners for the most suitable destination. If you show progression in your employability targets you may be able to progress to our Preparation for Work course. To progress to a pre-supported internship at CAVC you must have engaged in work placements and show willing to develop further work-related skills. If on completion of your course you are not ready to progress, you may be offered a second year on this course if:
1. This was your first year in college
2. You have made progress against your targets
This course has helped my with my independence and has given me lots more confidence. Both me and my parents were a bit nervous before I started the programme, but it's been a really great experience. I've been able to get too and from campus easily, even with a long bus route. I’m looking forward to progressing to the next step.
