About this course

On this one-year AS level Photography course students will gain a general introduction to digital photography and image software. 

Based at our City Centre campus in Cardiff, throughout the course pupils will also build and develop a portfolio of images. 

What you will study

Unit 1: Coursework Portfolio

This is a general introduction into the area of photography in the arts. It aims to equip you with the ability to take great photographs and express your ideas visually. You will learn to use digital cameras and to confidently use computer manipulation software to produce lens-based imagery. You will also gain insight into the historical and theoretical aspects of the subject, and develop a thorough understanding of composition, style and use of visual language in photography. 


Group critique sessions.
Submission of a research workbook and final images.

Unit 2: Externally Set Assignment

The emphasis of this unit will be the development of visual ideas, based on themes set by the exam board. You will have the opportunity to experiment with a range of techniques and materials to produce creative and original photographs. All practical work is supported by the production of a research workbook which charts the ways your ideas have developed, shows why you may have chosen specific materials and how each shoot has contributed to your final response. 


This unit incorporates a 5 hour supervised practical assessment.

Entry requirements

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A* - C including English Language and Maths.
  • Interview.

Individual subjects may require higher grades. 
Mature learners without these qualifications may be accepted after an interview with the subject tutor.
