About this course

The Level 1 in Film & Media is a BTEC Diploma delivered by Media Academy Cymru (MAC). This full-time course introduces students to the key areas of the creative media sector. The course focuses on developing students’ practical skills with the use of professional equipment & software in areas such as pre-production, camera skills (for both photography and film) post-edition and web design.

We provide an opportunity to work with industry professionals, who have first-hand experience in filmmaking. Our tutors will introduce you to the key areas of the film sector, focusing on developing your practical skills.

What you will study

On this introductory course you will learn the basics in filmmaking and its variety of mediums:

  • Scripting
  • Making Fiction Short Films; Animation and Documentaries
  • Advertising
  • Editing for Film & TV
  • Sound Design for Film & TV

Each module will focus on developing students’ practical skills to create unique media products like music videos, short films, podcasts, animated films, photo exhibitions and advertisements.

The work produced for each module will form the basis for assessment. Throughout the year you will build a comprehensive portfolio that will be significant for your progression to future education or employment.

MAC takes pride in delivering classes in a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere, focusing on your strengths to help you grow your confidence. You will learn in a small group of 12-16 students. Attendance of 90% and above is instrumental in your successful completion of the course.

Teaching and assessment

This programme comprises of 10 coursework modules.

Facilities

All equipment will be provided by MAC.

Students will have access to the sound studio and green room.

Entry requirements

No previous experience is required and there are no formal entry requirements. You will be invited to meet your tutors, so together, you can assess your suitability for the course. Once accepted onto the course, you will be invited for a taster session and complete a student profile.

All MAC courses are delivered in a relaxed, inclusive and encouraging atmosphere. Class sizes do not exceed 16 students. We especially welcome applications from students who have been unable to access similar opportunities elsewhere, are at risk of social exclusion, and are not in education, training or employment. This course is available to anyone between 16-25 years old.
