Our Level 2 Diploma in Filmmaking is delivered by Media Academy Cymru (MAC), in Cardiff. This is a full-time course that introduces students to the key areas of storytelling through the medium of film. It focuses on developing students’ practical skills.
You will learn to make films from start to finish - from script to screen. You will start by learning how to pitch film ideas and finish the course by screening your film in a cinema to industry professionals.
The course focuses on developing practical experience in areas such as:
• Cinematography and film history
• Preparing a film treatment
• Scriptwriting and storyboarding
• Pitching & development
• Set design & costume
• How to use professional equipment & software
• Working with actors
• Shooting a short film as a full crew
• Sound recording, score and sound effects
• Postproduction: editing, sound mix and colour grade
• Presenting a short film premiere
This course introduces the key areas of filmmaking: documentary and fiction. You will watch and critique a range of contemporary films; learn how to devise and pitch your own film ideas; work with still and moving archive and learn how to promote your work in different formats. You will make your own accomplished 10-minute films using filming, sound recording and editing equipment.
The work produced for each module will help you work towards the Digital Production Project Assessment. You will build a portfolio that will be instrumental for your progression to future education or employment.
Tutors at MAC takes pride in delivering classes in a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere, focusing on your strengths to help you grow your confidence. You will learn in a small group of 12-16 students. Attendance of 90% and above is instrumental in your successful completion of the course.
No previous experience is required and there are no formal entry requirements. However, it is helpful if you have already achieved a BTEC Level 1 in Media/Film/IT or have the equivalent experience. You will be invited to meet your tutors, so together, you can assess your suitability for the course. Once accepted onto the course, you will be invited for a taster session and complete a student profile. We especially welcome applications from students who have been unable to access similar opportunities elsewhere, are at risk of social exclusion, and are not in education, training or employment. This course is available to anyone between 16-25 years old.
This programme comprises of 4 coursework modules.
All equipment will be provided by MAC.
Students will have access to the sound studio and green room.
