The Level 2 Hairdressing course is designed for learners who are passionate about entering the hair and beauty industry and want to develop the essential technical and professional skills needed for employment or further study.
This programme provides two qualification pathways, giving students the opportunity to specialise and progress onto a variety of Level 3 routes including Hairdressing, Theatrical & Media Hair and Makeup, or to pursue apprenticeships, barbering, or nails and makeup.
The course runs over three days per week, with additional Saturday attendance on a rota basis. This timetable allows learners to gain practical salon experience while balancing theory, skills development, and assessment requirements.
Learners will also study Essential Skills Wales (ESW) or resit GCSE English if they previously achieved a grade D, ensuring they develop the communication skills and qualifications required for progression and employment.
Learners will develop the core practical skills and knowledge required for professional hairdressing, including:
Salon Fees: £30.00
3 GCSEs Grades A* - D including English Language (or equivalent). Satisfactory reference from Course Tutor. Alternatively, successful achievement of Level 1 and satisfactory reference. Satisfactory reference from School or College to indicate good behaviour, attendance and progress.
Students will work in a commercial salon environment, providing services to paying clients and models to build confidence and competence.
Learners are also required to bring their own models for specific assessments to ensure they have suitable opportunities to demonstrate their skills.
I really enjoyed my time studying at Cardiff and Vale College, it’s definitely helped me to get to where I wanted to be. I began on the Level 2 Beauty Therapy course and then progressed to the Level 3 Beauty and Spa Therapy. I then returned to do Level 4 Advanced Aesthetics. It was so great learning and getting valuable work experience in a real-life salon. The tutors were amazing, they were really helpful and supportive the whole way through. A real highlight for me was competing in the WorldSkills Competition and taking second place. Since leaving, I have set up my own salon, where I offer a range of different treatments. Next year I’ll be taking on a nail technician and a beauty therapist to help grow the business and offer even more services to my clients.
On successful completion of the Level 2 Hairdressing course, learners may progress to:
