About this course
This course is designed for 16-19-year olds who have no experience. It will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills in preparation for a career in the hairdressing or beauty industry.
Throughout this qualification you will ensure responsibility to reduce risks to health and safety, prepare and maintain work area and contribute to the development of effective working relationships
You will be supervised by technical staff and assessed on your competence.
What you will study
Includes: NVQ Level 1 Certificate in the introduction to the Hairdressing and Beauty sector This qualification will develop learner’s skills in:
- Shampooing and conditioning
Blow drying- Creating an image
- Plaiting and twisting
- Manicure
- Skincare
- Basic makeup application.
As well as a level 1 certificate in customer service. You wil also study Essential skills in communication and application of number. Any learner who achieved a GCSE grade D will have the opportunity to resit

Salon Fees: £15.00
Entry requirements
Applicants would benefit from achieving 3 GCSEs Grades D-F. Alternatively, applicants will be considered based on interview and a satisfactory skills scan, with a desire and commitment to complete the course they would wish to study.

I really enjoyed my time studying at Cardiff and Vale College, it’s definitely helped me to get to where I wanted to be. I began on the Level 2 Beauty Therapy course and then progressed to the Level 3 Beauty and Spa Therapy. I then returned to do Level 4 Advanced Aesthetics. It was so great learning and getting valuable work experience in a real-life salon. The tutors were amazing, they were really helpful and supportive the whole way through. A real highlight for me was competing in the WorldSkills Competition and taking second place. Since leaving, I have set up my own salon, where I offer a range of different treatments. Next year I’ll be taking on a nail technician and a beauty therapist to help grow the business and offer even more services to my clients.
