About this course

The one-year VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up is a technical-level qualification designed for learners aiming to begin a professional career within the hair and make-up industry.

This course prepares students to deliver high-quality hair and make-up services across a wide range of creative sectors, including television, theatre, performing arts, fashion, and photographic work. Training takes place in the College’s dedicated specialist facilities. There are also work-placement opportunities, as well as industry visits across a broad range of production companies and professional industry links associated with the course.

Students will be expected to complete additional work-experience hours outside of their college timetable, helping them to build confidence and practical skills in their field of study.

All learners will be required to purchase a full kit and uniform prior to starting the course. Alongside the main qualification, all learners are expected to complete Essential Skills Wales (Communication and Application of Number) or a GCSE resit, where applicable.

What you will study

This dynamic course explores the creative and technical skills needed for work in the theatrical, media and special-effects industries. You will develop your expertise in areas such as airbrush application, camouflage and media make-up, fashion and photographic styling, and wig styling. Training also includes applying prosthetic pieces and bald caps, as well as fantasy hair work for performers.

Throughout the course, you will have opportunities to work with real clients and performers, building confidence in professional communication, client care, and maintaining high standards of health and safety. Many of our learners progress directly into industry roles, or continue their study with us on our Level 4 programme: HNC Technical Make-up Artistry for TV, Film and Theatre.

GCSE resits are available for learners who achieve a grade D in Maths or English.

Entry requirements

Successful achievement in relevant Level 2 Diploma (Hair/Beauty) alongside a satisfactory reference from Course Tutor indicating good behaviour, satisfactory attendance and progress. Alternatively, 4 GCSEs grade A-D (including Maths and English) and a successful practical skills interview. Prior Learning and work experience will also be considered. All students will be required to submit a portfolio of evidence to the course tutor.
