About this course
Our VTCT Level 1 and 2 Beauty qualification is designed for learners who want to develop skills and begin working in a professional, commerical environment. This programme can only be delivered by colleges with access to a genuine, fully operational salon - not just stimulating training space - and includes all the essential elements needed to work effectively within the beauty industry. It is a requirement to complete the level 1 part of the course before starting a suitable level 2 qualification.
What you will study
This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a Beauty Therapist: Salon Health and Safety, Client consultation, Prescription facial, Eyebrow and eyelash tinting, False lash application and removal, Day, Evening and Special occasion make-up application, Manicure and Pedicure, Setting up and assisting in Spa. Further optional units are waxing and lash lift. As part of a full-time course, students are required to undertake Work placement in a busy working Salon/Spa to enhance their skills. Also, students are required to study ESW (Essential Skills Wales, Application of Number and Communications), with some enriching Saturdays and evenings to support learning. Learners who achieve Grade D in either English or Maths will be able to resit their GCSE's whilst studying this course.
As part of your training you can enter Welsh and Worldskills competitions to enhance your learning experience. We have many learners who have been successful in this area of work and this year a student has successfully made it to the National Worldskills Final in Beauty Therapy.

Entry requirements
3 GCSEs Grades A* - D including English Language (or equivalent). Satisfactory reference from Course Tutor. Alternatively, successful achievement of Level 1 and satisfactory reference. Satisfactory reference from School or College to indicate good behaviour, attendance and progress.
Facilities
Learners will be studying in a realistic working commercial Beauty salon. Urbasba is a fully equipped Hairdressing and Beauty Spa providing high levels of training and services. Many of our learners go on to compete in Skills competitions, showcasing their talent on a national stage.

I really enjoyed my time studying at Cardiff and Vale College, it’s definitely helped me to get to where I wanted to be. I began on the Level 2 Beauty Therapy course and then progressed to the Level 3 Beauty and Spa Therapy. I then returned to do Level 4 Advanced Aesthetics. It was so great learning and getting valuable work experience in a real-life salon. The tutors were amazing, they were really helpful and supportive the whole way through. A real highlight for me was competing in the WorldSkills Competition and taking second place. Since leaving, I have set up my own salon, where I offer a range of different treatments. Next year I’ll be taking on a nail technician and a beauty therapist to help grow the business and offer even more services to my clients.

NVQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy provides you with the skills and confidence to progress onto the next level of study at Level 3 Beauty Therapy. This is subject to success at Level 2 Beauty Therapy and a suitable reference from the tutor. Learners can also progress onto Level 3 Theatrical Makeup or Level 2 Hairdressing.
