My initial interest in undertaking this course was stimulated when a close acquaintance of mine, informed me that CAVC provided an adults learning class one evening a week in brickwork.
The way the course was provided (namely evenings), was perfect for my working pattern. With a demanding conventional job, evenings would have been the only option available for me, so this course was perfect.
Thus far, the modules I have completed, include ‘face brick’ work, ‘block brick’ work, pointing and the mechanics in continually aerating the mortar. After each session, the dedicated online (YouTube) channel, allow students the opportunity to recall what the session contained, as well as viewing what future weeks have in store. Even in such a small period, I feel more confident to approach small jobs in around my property. The balance between practice and theory is perfect and ideal for my learning style.
The equipment provided by the department is of excellent quality and is readily available. Upon arrival of each session, the mortar is ready, and the lesson commences promptly.
In terms of tuition, a special mention to the Brickwork Lecturer (Mr Adam James). Adam is always approachable and patient to those that require some additional assistance (that includes myself!!). The feedback provided is always constructive and never negative. Adam has gone out of his way to ensure that the flow of the course is a standard acceptable to the wider group and never leaves any student behind. I personally feel Admas experience in an industrial setting lends itself to a training setting perfectly, which is what makes him such an effective lecturer.
I highly recommend this course of anyone considering something new. From small domestic projects to foundations of Bricklaying, I would advocate this course to all.

The sessions are run in easy to understand way, with plenty of opportunities to ask for help and advice and lots of encouragement from the teaching staff. The way in which we have been doing building tasks right from the start has given us plenty of hands on experience which has clearly helped us learn so quickly.
I have learned how to build a brick wall, a breeze block wall and corner wall which is brilliant.
I have enjoyed the course a great deal.
