About this course

In partnership with Fivefold Studios, Tramshed Tech and Coleg y Cymoedd, this exciting Virtual Production Bootcamp will teach the fundamentals of this area whilst giving learners the opportunity to gain hands-on experience. 

Delivered at a world leading virtual production facility and across the region, you will benefit from industry expertise and access to high-quality equipment which mirrors professional standards. This immersive programme focuses on the cutting-edge techniques and technologies, offering practical training in:

  • LED and Green Screen Technologies 
  • Camera Tracking basics
  • VP Colour
  • Lighting basics 

The Virtual Production Bootcamp is an excellent opportunity for early to mid-career professionals looking to expand their skills as well as recent graduates seeking practical experience. 

What you will study

This 6-Day course delivered over 3 weeks, provides a short-sharp introduction to key sector areas and in demand from employers. By the end of this Bootcamp, you will have experience and an understanding of:

  • Roles, On-Set Dynamics & Hardware Foundations: this includes psychometric testing to find your own communication and working style; a guided tour of a production studio; the difference between traditional and virtual production; key roles and on-set dynamics; LED walls; green screen set ups; camera tracking; essential hardware.
  • Object Tracking: learners will learn to set up and calibrate a Vicon system for tracking, configuring cameras, placing markers and establishing capture volume. This can in turn be applied to animation, compositing and VFX workflows.
  • Performance Capture: building on the previous day, learners will set up and calibrate a Vicon system for performance capture, including placing body markers and defining capture volume. 
  • Scene Building, Workflow & Hands-On Practice: learners will have a foundational grasp of colour and lighting principles alongside practical knowledge of 2D and 3D playback systems.

This last teaching day will end with an open-ended Q&A session to reflect on the course.
The final day will be a speed interview session, providing participants with the opportunity to engage with multiple employers. This will build on communication skills and allow you to build professional connections whilst discussing the knowledge gained from the programme.

Entry requirements

The Virtual Production Bootcamp has been designed for a diverse range of participants. Ideal candidates include early to mid-career professionals as well as recent graduates in the field. This Bootcamp is inclusive and welcomes learners from various backgrounds with different levels of experience. After screening, your application will be reviewed by the delivery provider for suitability before enrolment. Applicants must be 18+ and live or work in the Cardiff Capital Region, which includes Bridgend, Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Torfaen, and the Vale of Glamorgan.
