This course is designed for learners who wish to pursue a career in hospitality and catering. It provides hands-on experience in both front-of-house and kitchen areas, allowing you to develop practical skills in a real restaurant environment.
Throughout the year, you will build Level 1 and Level 2 culinary skills while gaining valuable experience in live working settings. You will also develop a wide range of customer service skills, alongside essential skills in communication and the application of number.
Learners who have achieved a grade D in GCSE English or Maths will have the opportunity to take re-sits alongside the course to improve their qualifications.
You will study all aspects of kitchen and restaurant work, developing practical skills in areas such as customer care, food safety, health and safety, and the preparation and cookery of meat and poultry, fish, vegetables, pasta, rice, sauces, and soups. You will also gain experience in restaurant service, bar service, function service, and other industry-relevant skills.
The course combines theory and practical lessons, with assessment carried out in a live working environment. There are no formal written exams, allowing you to demonstrate your skills through real-world performance.
Training and assessment will take place mainly in our facility in Barry, The Glamorgan Suite, where our busy restaurant welcomes customers to lunches, dinners, events and functions throughout the year.
Applicants would benefit from achieving 3 GCSEs Grades D-F. Alternatively, applicants will be considered based on interview and a satisfactory skills scan, with a desire and commitment to complete the course they would wish to study.
I chose to study at Cardiff and Vale College because school wasn’t for me, and I wasn’t interested in any of the subjects. The Hospitality course has opened so many doors for me – including getting to the semi-finals of the Nestle Toque d’Or, winning in Skills Competition Wales and winning Best in Nation at WorldSkills in Lyon in 2024. The College has given me the skills to achieve my goals and has helped me secure work at Lucknam Park as a chef de rang in Restaurant Hywel Jones. I’ve recently completed my HND in Hospitality Management at the college and progressed to a degree course at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
After successful completion of this course, you will be able to specialise in either Front of House or Kitchen at Level Three. You can progress onto either a Level Three Hospitality Management course, which is Front of House or progress onto a Level Three Professional Cookery course.
