About this course

Our BTEC Level 2 in Applied Science is a one-year full time course designed for learners considering a future career in the science industry.  Based at our City Centre campus in Cardiff, this is a vocational programme delivering a wide range of theoretical and practical skills to develop learners’ understanding and knowledge of scientific principles. Studying in the College's dedicated classrooms and facilities, students who gain a distinction may also progress to a more specialised Level 3 Vocational course or on to A Level Sciences.

What you will study

Topics covered include:

  • Scientific practical skills
  • Biological principles to include human biology, science in medicine and the environment
  • Principles in Chemistry to include analysis and detection 
  • Principles in Physics to include electronics and the universe

Learners will also gain the following essential skills qualifications:

  • Application of Number
  • Communications

Learners without C grades (or above) in GCSE Maths and English will also be required to re-sit GCSEs in:

  • English Language
  • Maths

Teaching and Assessment

2 units to be assessed by completing a 1-hour exam in each.

14 units are assessed through a combination of written and practical assignments completed within class time or as individual study.

4 GCSEs A* - D including English Language, Maths and Science.
