About this course

The aim of the course is to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of creative textile techniques that you can apply to the creation of your own Textile Artefact.

On this course you will be introduced to a selection of textile techniques, gain techincal knowledge and develop confidence in using specialist textile equipment, including a sewing machine. You will develop a sketchbook practice that includes drawing and build a portfolio of textile samples, before applying your new skills to the creation of your Artefact. Additionally, you will learn about the history of textile artefacts and fiber arts on this course, to help inspire your experimentation and creations.  

What you will study

The textile techniques you will learn on this course include: hand embroidery, freehand machine embroidery and hand weaving. You will be expected to use one or more of these in the creation of your final Textile Artefact. If you are accustomed with other textile or art techniques, you are encouraged to incorporate these too!

Facilities

Cardiff and Vale College has specialist Art & Design workshops and computer facilities.

This course will be based in the Fashion & Textiles room which is fully equipped with all the textiles equipment you will need for this course. Other specialist spaces include Fine Art, Ceramics and Printmaking.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a keen interest in art, textiles or craft, and be motivated to learn new skills, as well as be experimental with their work. No qualifications, portfolio or prior textiles experience needed.
