About this course

The Photography AS program is a one-year course of study and should be taken in conjunction with two or three other subjects and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Based at our City Centre campus in Cardiff, learners may be able to take this qualification as a part-time student.

Our aim is to equip you with the ability to take great photographs and explore image-making in a variety of digital media. You will gain insight into the contextual and creative aspects of the subject, alongside the technical elements of image construction, learning how to use digital camera equipment and the manipulation software package Adobe Photoshop to produce portrait, landscape, still life or abstract photographic images. You will also develop skills in picture editing and image analysis.

This subject is ideally suited to those with an interest in photography, film & visual art. It is a great way to enhance a portfolio for entry into Higher Education or for those who would like a practical subject to balance other academic subjects. This course is very enjoyable but is not an easy option and you must be able to manage your time effectively to take photographs on a regular basis, with successful students shooting consistently in their own time, throughout each project.

Note: You will need to use your own digital camera (Compact £100 - DSLR £400) and will have to get final imagery enlarged at commercial printing labs throughout the course. You may incur extra expenses for educational visits, materials or printing costs.
