About this course

This course covers a combination of microeconomics and macroeconomics which develop an understanding of economic concepts and theories, through consideration of current economic issues, problems and institutions which affect everyday life locally, nationally and globally.

A2 Economics is a one-year course and should be taken alongside two or three other subjects and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

It may be possible to take this course as a part-time student.

What you will study

You will learn to apply economic concepts and theories using a wide range of contexts and to appreciate their value and limitations in explaining real world phenomena.  You will develop an appreciation of the complex and interrelated nature of economics and analytical and quantitative skills in selecting, interpreting and using appropriate data from a range of sources.

There is the opportunity to develop an awareness of contemporary economic issues relevant to the Welsh economy and an understanding of the recent economic history of Wales using publically accessible information.  You will study the role markets play and the way in which governments seek to manage them.

After studying units 1 and 2 at AS, the A2 course covers:

A2 Unit 3:  Exploring Economic Behaviour
Written exam:  2 hrs;  30% of qualification
Structured questions based on A2 content.  One compulsory data response.  Covers all A level content.

Written exam:  2 hrs 30 mins;  30% of qualification
One essay in each section:
