About this course

The Chemistry A2 programme is a one-year course of study and should be taken in conjunction with two or three other subjects and the Welsh Baccalaureate. 

Based at our City Centre campus in Cardiff, learners may be able to take this qualification as a part-time student. A qualification in Chemistry can lead to a higher education course in Chemistry, Engineering or other science/technology related subjects, or to employment where knowledge of Chemistry would be useful.

What you will study

A2 Chemistry covers the following units:

Unit 3 Physical and Inorganic Chemistry

Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes (80 marks) 25% of qualification.

A range of short answer, structured and extended response questions.

Unit 4 Organic Chemistry and Analysis

Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes (80 marks) 25% of qualification.

A range of short answer, structured and extended response questions.

Unit 5 Practical

(60 marks) 10% of qualification.  This unit comprises of two tasks:

Experimental Task (30 marks) 
Practical Methods and Analysis Task (30 marks)

Note that the remaining 40% of the available marks would have been carried forward from AS Chemistry.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of AS programme including satisfactory attendance and tutor recommendation.
