Meet ... Samir

"

I started my CAVC journey at 16 years old as a learner and then at 17, the college offered for me to work as an agency technician for a short while. I then started as a part-time technician in Colcot Road in Barry, and then eventually was offered the full time position. After doing this for a few years, I completed my PGCE and became an instructor, then from this I became an automotive commercial lecturer. After this, I then developed into becoming an Excellence Lead which is my current role. The main part of my job is to support members of staff with teaching and learning as everything we do is teaching and learning based; Whether it is offering bespoke sessions for them, CPD for the whole college, action plans, coaching, anything to support our members of staff to become the best that they can be.

The people I work with are definitely a highlight of the job – we have a very good CAVC community, it’s very diverse and inclusive and that is probably one of the best things about this place. One of the company values is to be inclusive, which for me is huge as it includes having places to pray and allowing you the freedom of being you without judgment. There is support that comes with it – I recently had a member of staff saying to me “Hey Samir it’s prayer time, I'll take your lesson for two minutes, go and pray” which I just thought, wow – so it really is just the little things like that.

One of the biggest opportunities that I’m really enjoying working on at a moment is everything we’re doing in the anti-racism group in the college - to change the way things are done and help become an anti-racist college for all staff and learners.
