Cardiff and Vale College signs Cynefin Charter

Cardiff and Vale College has signed up to the Cynefin Charter, reaffirming the College’s commitment to inclusion and belonging.

Supported by Colegau Cymru, the Charter places equity, diversity and inclusion at the heart of all Welsh colleges’ approach to education and training. Rooted in the Welsh concept of Cynefin – a deep sense of belonging to a place, community or culture – the Charter sets out a shared vision for colleges to be places of respect where learners and staff feel safe to be true selves and can thrive.

The Charter recognises that a sense of belonging is fundamental to wellbeing, safety, happiness and success. It also celebrates the unique cultural and linguistic identity of Wales, ensuring that the Welsh language and the diverse heritage of local communities remain central to inclusive college cultures.

A key principle within the Charter is the recognition that individuals may experience multiple and overlapping forms of discrimination. Colleges therefore commit to addressing barriers related to factors such as race, faith, disability, gender, sexual orientation and socio-economic circumstances, while prioritising wellbeing and anti-racism across their institutions.

The Charter also reaffirms the sector’s continued commitment to anti-racism, building on the work already underway across Welsh colleges to challenge racism, remove structural barriers and ensure that colleges are safe, inclusive places for Black, Asian and minority ethnic learners and staff.

The Charter also requires rigorous measurement of success, with progress being evaluated through clear objectives, monitored at Board level and published annually.

Cardiff and Vale College Principal Sharon James-Evans said: “We are delighted to sign the Cynefin Charter, reaffirming our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

“As the College that serves one of the most diverse and vibrant communities in Wales, we stand by the principals of this Charter. We believe ourselves to be at the heart of the communities we serve and that all colleagues and learners are part of the same family, and this Charter aligns with that commitment.”
