Cardiff and Vale College has been awarded the prestigious Princess Royal Training Award for its exceptional commitment to learning and development and impactful training programmes for colleagues.

HRH The Princess Royal, as President of City & Guilds, awards employers with outstanding training and skills development programmes which have had a significant positive impact on their business or their staff. The prestigious awards, now in their tenth year, are open to employers across all sectors in the UK.

Cardiff and Vale College’s Teaching for Excellence programme was developed to ensure CAVC delivers impactful and effective teaching and learning that supports learner success and continually develops teaching practitioners. With 200+ teaching colleagues completing the full programme and 500 more accessing targeted modules, feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

Teaching for Excellence modules are designed to include facilitated classroom sessions, pedagogical reading, webinars, video-clips, practical actions, and embed classroom research. Bespoke online learning units with reflective logs accompany modules and teachers attend sessions and workshops to support classroom research projects. These are complemented by classroom visits and coaching from Excellence Leads. The programme concludes with a TeachMeet where projects are shared.

The programme, which has now been running for five years, continues to grow and develop, with continued positive feedback from colleagues on the support it provides for their practice and the impact it has on the success of learners.

Cardiff and Vale College Principal Sharon James-Evans said: “We are thrilled to be awarded the Princess Royal Training Award. As a learning organisation we put the skills and development of the entire CAVC community – colleagues, learners and wider the community – at the very heart of what we do.

“We’re proud of the Teaching for Excellence programme – the impact it has had can be seen in the classroom and is demonstrated by its popularity. It has been successful in achieving its objectives in creating reflective practitioners, and the continuing aim of striving for excellence.

“We’d like to thank the Princess Royal for this award and the recognition of the importance of training to address skills gaps and the importance of investing in your workforce. We are proud of everyone involved with CAVC and especially proud to have received this award.”
