Cardiff and Vale College’s Careers and Ideas team marked this year’s National Green Careers Week with a special careers fayre, highlighting the benefits of working in the green and net zero industries.
Guest speakers talked about all the different job opportunities available in the green and net zero industries, and learners had the chance to interact with employers including Realis Atkins, Galliford Try and LCB Construction. The Technology Enhanced Learning team also supported, with VR experiences on related careers.
Carpentry learner Mohamed Faleh said: “The Green Careers Fayre was amazing – there are lots of opportunities. It was nice to speak to the employers and find out about seeking work or an apprenticeship.”
Fellow Carpentry learner Ryan Cann said: “I thought the Fayre was really good. It was nice to see people offering opportunities to people in the trade sector.”
Multi-Trades Construction Junior Apprentice Danny said: “I found what the speakers were talking about interesting and that I could consider going into what they’re doing. There was a lot of information and I got enough to know what I want to be doing, where I could go and what I could do.”
Scott Davis, Partnerships and Social Value Manager at LCB Group, said: “I would like to thank the Careers and Ideas team for arranging the Green Careers event at Cardiff and Vale College. It was really well attended this year with students who are undertaking a variety of qualifications and who were keen to ask questions.
“Hopefully it was an insight into the world of Retrofit and what it offers them as a career choice. We look forward to supporting similar future events.”
Galliford Try Regional Community and Social Impact Manager Dawn Jevons said: “We at Galliford Try were delighted to attend the Green Careers Week 2024 at Cardiff and Vale College, where we had the opportunity to meet with passionate and talented students who represent the future of the construction industry.”
CAVC is committed to providing state-of-the-art training in the green and net zero industries. It has a Green Technology Centre at its City Centre Campus and recently announced that its plans for an Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) at Cardiff Airport have been approved by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
The ATC will include an advanced composites manufacturing facility, state of the art robotics and mechatronics labs and a “green skills house”. Students will use Virtual Reality and AI and have access to rapid prototyping, 3D metal printers and autonomous drones to support their studies. Automotive students will work with both electric and hydrogen vehicles.
