The German A2 course is a one year course of study following on from AS German.
There are 2 themes studied in AS German:
Diversity and difference.
The making of modern Germany – 1989 onwards.
Theme 1 – Diversity and difference.
Learners will study migration and integration, cultural identity and marginalisation, cultural enrichment and celebrating difference and discrimination and diversity. This is a theme which resonates in the lives of young people today and will enable the learner to empathise with issues and deepen their knowledge of how they affect the countries or communities where German is spoken.
Theme 2 - The making of modern Germany – 1989 onwards.
In this theme, learners will study initial and subsequent process of reunification, social cohesion in present-day Germany, artistic and political movements and the economic impact of a united Germany. This introduces learners to a country specific theme focusing on a key period in the history of Germany, including significant events in political, intellectual and artistic culture, which have helped shape the country as it is today.
Learners will in addition study a set book.
Teaching and assessment
3 hours of delivery per week
Unit 3: Speaking (18% of qualification)
The speaking assessment will last 11 – 12 minutes in total and will comprise one task. Students will deliver a presentation of 2 minutes on a topic that they have researched and this can be anything connected with German-speaking countries or communities. Following the presentation, there will be a discussion of 9 – 10 minutes based on the presentation.
Unit 4: Listening, Reading and translation (30% of qualification)
For this assessment, learners have to answer comprehension questions based on Listening and Reading passages and translate a passage from English into German.
Unit 5: Critical and analytical response in writing (12% of qualification)
Learners will write an essay of approximately 400 words on the book that we have studied. There will be a choice of 2 questions

This course is ideal if you wish to develop a deeper knowledge of German society, language and culture. You will also benefit from this course if you need to use German for work, study, training or leisure activities, as you will develop all four skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing. Furthermore, this course will provide an insight into the cultural aspects of German speaking countries, as well as providing the opportunities for students to explore contemporary issues.
