About this course

This course is for young people who are working towards improving their independent living and employability skills.  Our Work and Life Skills course is one of our Personalised Learning Pathways (PLP), which offer learners the flexibility to focus on areas of their personal development that are important to them.  Learners will be supported to create their own learning pathways, based on their personal targets, interests and aspirations.  Learners will have the opportunity to engage in group and individual work placements, within the college and with external partners.

What you will study

Throughout the academic year, learners will participate in a variety of projects specifically designed to facilitate skills development in a range of areas.  These projects provide meaningful learning experiences, offering learners the scope to easily identify their strengths, qualities and areas for improvement, in a variety of settings.

Learners will follow personalised learning pathways, based on their individual targets.  These pathways can include learning in the following curriculum areas;

  • Communication Skills
  • Independent Living Skills
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Work Skills
  • Community Engagement
  • Building Resilience

Learners will be supported to recognise and record their progress and achievements in a way that is exciting and accessible to them.  This may include building ePortfolios, using written work, photographs, videos clips, soundbites and infographics.

Our Work and Life Skills courses are highly supported by staff from our Additional Learning Needs and Wellbeing Team at CAVC.

Our Personalised Learning Pathways offer learners the flexibility to focus on areas of their personal development that are important to them. For this reason, this course is a non-accredited route.

What our students say
Towards Independence - Arfana Begum

I like my lessons, teacher and being with my friends at college. I enjoy cooking and working on the iPad in my lessons and have learnt to write my name! My teachers at the college are always kind and happy. I like coming to college because I always learn new things. My favourite thing to do is when we go on the bus to go shopping and buy ingredients for our cooking lessons! I would tell my friends to come to college because it is brilliant and fun!
