About this course

The aim of the Health and Social care CORE is to provide learners with the knowledge needed to progress into roles within the Health and Social care sector. It will enable learners to apply for registration with social care Wales. The qualification will provide a thorough introduction to the principles, values and knowledge needed to work in the healthcare and social care sectors with adults and children and young people.
This programme is for individuals who are currently working in the sector or wish to work within the sector. 

It is suitable for:

  • Learners 19+ who are employed within the Health and social care sector 
  • Learners 19+ who wish enter the sector and need to register with social care Wales 
  • Support workers in a primary care environment 
  • Healthcare assistants 
  • Healthcare support workers

This FREE course is only available to adults that are eligible for a Personal Learning Account (PLA). Personal Learning Accounts, funded by the Welsh Government, are available to employed adults living in Wales that wish to develop skills to progress or change career.

What you will study

The content for this qualification supports learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of:

  • the core principles and values which underpin health and social care practice
  • ways of working in the health and social care sectors
  • effective practice within health and social care
  • progression routes to further study or employment within Health and Social Care safeguarding.

The qualification has three pathways:

  • Level 2 Health and Social Care: Core (Adults)
  • Level 2 Health and Social Care: Core (Children and Young People)

To achieve the (Adults) and (Children and Young People) pathways within this qualification, candidates must pass:

  • three externally-set scenario-based assessments that are marked in the centre and are taken throughout the qualification 
  • one externally-set, externally-marked multiple choice test.

On completion, the qualification will provide a broad foundation of knowledge across health and social care. The Level 2 Health and Social Care: Core qualification provides the knowledge to progress on to:

  • Level 2 Health and Social Care: Practice (Adults)
  • Level 3 Health and Social Care: Practice (Adults)
  • Level 3 Health and Social Care: Practice (Children and Young People)

Teaching and assessment

Learners will also be expected to attend digital or face to face training on all knowledge elements, these are broken into workshops.

We have designed our workshops to be delivered over a rolling programme that will suit most learners work shift patterns where needed. Our assessors will work with our learners to book them onto the most suitable sessions. In most cases Learners would attend one to two modules a month.

  • 5 x workshops of three hours long
  • 3 x sample case studies of one hour long
  • 3 x real live case studies of one hour long
  • 1 x sample multiple choice test
  • 1 x real live multiple choice test
