About this course

The French A2 programme follows on from AS French and should be taken in conjunction with two or three other subjects and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Based at our City Centre campus in Cardiff, learners may be able to take this qualification as a part-time student.

What you will study

There are 2 themes which will be studied in A2 French:

  • Diversity and Difference and France 1940-1950:
  • The Occupation and the post-war years.

Theme 3: Diversity and Difference

Students will study migration and integration, cultural identity and marginalisation, cultural enrichment and celebrating difference and discrimination and diversity. 

Theme 4: France 1940-1950: The Occupation and the post-war years

This introduces learners to a country specific theme focusing on a key period in the history of France, including significant events in political, intellectual and artistic culture, which have helped shape the country as it is today.

Learners will in addition study one literary text.

Teaching and assessment

There are 3 examinations in total.

Unit 3 Speaking - 18% of qualification

This will last 11 – 12 minutes in total and comprises 1 task. Learners will undertake an independent research project which will provide them with the opportunity to choose an area of personal interest for independent study through which they will be encouraged to broaden their knowledge and appreciation of the countries or communities where French is spoken. In the examination, learners present their chosen topic and will then be asked questions on it.

Unit 4 Listening Reading and Translation - 30% of Qualification

2 hour examination

Unit 5 Critical and analytical response in writing - 12% of qualification 

1 hour 30 minutes examination

Learners are required to produce a critical and analytical response in writing, in approximately 400 words, to a question on the literary work studied taken from the prescribed list.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of AS programme including satisfactory attendance and tutor recommendation.
