About this course

This English Language & Literature – A2 is a one-year course which should be taken alongside two or three other subjects and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

It may be possible to take this course as a part-time student.

English Language & Literature is an exciting course which aims to be as diverse as possible. You will study and apply the skills of both literary and linguistic analysis to a wide range of texts including poetry, prose and drama as well as non-fiction and spoken language, and you will produce your own creative writing. 

What you will study

After studying units 1 and 2 at AS, the A2 course covers:

Unit 3: Shakespeare

  • Written Examination (2 hours, closed book); 20% of qualification
  • Section A: Shakespeare extract
  • Section B: Shakespeare essay

Unit 3: Unseen Text and Prose Study

  • Written examination (2 hours, open book); 20% of qualification
  • Section A: Unseen texts
  • Section B: Prose study

Unit 5: Critical and Creative Genre Study

  • Non-exam assessment:  2500-3000 works;  20% of qualification
  • Section A: Genre study
  • Section B: Related creative writing

Successful completion of AS programme including satisfactory attendance and tutor recommendation.
