About this course
This CAD course is delivered in two parts and includes the delivery of a level 2 and level 3 CAD Certificate with City and Guilds. The first part of the course will provide learners with the essential skills in how to use Computer Aided Design software more specifically 2D and parametric modelling software. You will learn how an object is designed in either 2D and how objects can be manufactured.
The second part of the course will move onto providing comprehensive training on Computer Aided Design software; this CAD course is for those who want a more advanced look at specialist 2D/3D design skills including parametric modelling, that builds on the existing knowledge gained in the first part. Learners who come from a background in computing, design or may have worked in manufacturing or engineering design industry may also find this CAD qualification of particular interest.
On successful completion of full time course, you could enrol onto the Level 3 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering qualification or present yourself for possible job roles in advanced manufacturing and engineering such as a draughtsperson or design engineer.
Those who have an interest or some experience in computing and design packages will benefit from this course and will develop knowledge and skills used in engineering drawing that will help develop a potential career in manufacturing or engineering design.
What you will study
To achieve both the Level 2 and Level 3 certificates in CAD learners must achieve:
201: Computer Aided Design using Parametric Modelling Software
This unit develops the knowledge and skills used to create sketches, work features, table driven parts/assemblies and drawing layouts
202: Using 2D Computer Aided Design software
This unit will equip students with the basic understanding and principles of 2D drawing environments: hardware, software and physical surroundings.
301: Computer Aided Design using Parametric Modelling Software
Develop knowledge and skills to generate and edit advanced models, assemblies and photorealistic rendered animations
302: Using 2D Computer Aided Design software
Create complex drawings using multiple view layouts and managing CAD drawing data/libraries in line with industry standards
303: Using 3D Computer Aided Design software
This unit will allow students to develop the ability to apply drafting procedures required to create and modify existing 3D objects; surfaces or solids within a 3D space
You will also undertake project work which will include project management within the BIM aspects of industry (Business Improvement Management).
Teaching and assessment
All units in these qualifications are assessed by assignments set by City & Guilds, internally marked by centres and externally verified. These assignments are graded Pass, Merit and Distinction. Each assignment consists of practical tasks and short-answer questions. These assessments have all been developed with input from experts in the industry.

Time of day
I got the chance to go to France as part of a student exchange project which was really exciting and worked on different aircraft to what we have here at ICAT. The tutors really want you to succeed, everyone is so knowledgeable and it’s a great environment to learn and develop in.
I’ve started an apprenticeship with Boeing to get my A Licence and this time next year I could be working at Gatwick Airport as well as with military aircraft. There’s so many options for me now and you never know where this can take me. If you’re looking for an engineering course or have an interest in aircraft, I’d say go for it! Get stuck in and you’ll have a great experience.
