About this course

Keen to develop your talent in art, design or multimedia and train for a career in the creative industries? You've come to the right place! Our WJEC Foundation Studies Diploma in Art and Design provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop and enrich their current art and design practice in preparation for taking on a degree course in areas such as Fine Art, Graphics, Media, 3D design, Fashion and Textiles, Ceramics, Photography and more.  Many of our students progress to BA courses across the country whilst some may wish to progress to a specialist arts degree at our local university Cardiff Met with whom we maintain strong historical ties. Studying in our dedicated specialist studios and multimedia suites, students will gain a Level 3/4 qualification, which will have an impact on UCAS points and applications to HE Colleges.

What you will study

The course provides the support and expertise necessary to take the first steps in the training of creative artists and designers in all fields. It enables students to make the transition from school, college or other backgrounds to the highly competitive specialist demands of Higher Education within art and design.

The teaching staff have a wide range of backgrounds and all are practicing artists or designers in their own right. They have a great deal of knowledge and experience of art and design courses in the UK and are able to advise students on H.E. progression routes to match the ability and ambition of the student.

Many students go on to study at prestigious universities.

Foreign visits for students wishing to experience the art and culture of different cities across Europe are organized. In previous years students have visited Barcelona, Florence and Krakow.

It is essential that all prospective learners are over the age of 18 by 1st September of the year they intend to study.

An exciting, fast paced studio environment helps to develop practical and conceptual skills. The course provides you with an understanding of 2D, 3D and 4D. You will focus your study on four main areas alongside a critical theory component. These are:

  • Fine Art
  • Fashion and Textiles
  • 3D
  • Graphics and Illustration

You will also develop your skills in areas such as critical thinking, film/photography, animation, ceramics and printmaking.

The Art and Design Foundation Course is designed to deliver the broadest possible range of skills and experiences including critical thinking, film/photography, animation, ceramics, printmaking, computer aided design/illustration and many more.

What our students say

Everyone is really friendly and the learning experience has been great - the tutors are always supportive. I'd recommend going to College as it's a great route into university or work. I'm lucky enough to be studying a course I really enjoy and that's the most important thing.
