About this course

This course is ideal for school leavers, giving a useful insight into the aviation world, providing the basic knowledge for those wanting to progress onto level 3 courses, employment or apprenticeships. 

This theory and practical based course enables learners to develop the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to become an aerospace technician or engineer.  This qualification is a vital part of either an intermediate or advanced apprenticeship in the Aerospace sector. 

This qualification is designed to equip a new entrant into the aviation industry with the fundamental and basic knowledge required as part of their training as an unlicensed aircraft mechanic.

What you will study

The units for this qualification that will be studied includes:

  • Mathematics and Science Principles
  • Engineering Environmental Awareness
  • Aerospace Engineering Techniques
  • Electrical Systems and Devices
  • Aerospace Hand Fitting Techniques
  • Aerospace Computer Aided Design

This course balances theory and practical to provide prospective students all the fundamental skills and is delivered in all parts of our aerospace campus including classrooms, aircraft hangar, avionic laboratories and our CAD design suite.

The qualification is assessed by a combination of e-assessments (multiple choice online tests) and centre devised assignments covering the topics detailed in the course content.

This qualification can help you to progress onto a level 3 course and/or set the foundations for you to progress in a wide range of aerospace engineering roles, including:

  • Aircraft Mechanic
  • Aerospace Technician
  • Licenced Aircraft Engineer

The qualification is also recognised as part of an intermediate apprenticeship and would see future employment and apprenticeship opportunities become viable.

Entry requirements

Applicants who hold or are predicated to gain 5 GCSE’s – to include grade of at least D in maths and English and three remaining GCSE’s at Grade A*- E. You must also be computer literate on Windows PC machines and applications. Applications from mature students who may have interests or industry experience will also be considered. Are also:

  • Keen and motivated to work in an engineering environment
  • Willing to undertake a course of intense training
  • Have completed tests in basic numeracy, literacy and communication skills and have spatial awareness Would be eligible to apply for this course.
