Our Work Skills courses are for young people who are working towards either supported or independent employment. The learners will participate in a range of classroom-based lessons, group projects and work placements, both within the college and with local employers. This diverse approach equips our learners with the skills and knowledge they need to become confident and successful employees, who are well prepared for the jobs market.
Throughout the academic year learners will build a greater understanding and increase their level of skill, in the areas listed below.
Learners will also be expected to continue improving their essential skills, including working towards qualifications in Application of Number (AON) and Communication (Comms.).
Learners will be supported to maintain either paper or e-portfolios, recording their progress and achievements against assessment criteria. Learners will be expected to produce evidence in a variety of ways, including written work, photographs, videos clips, soundbites and infographics. These portfolios will be assessed on completion. Learners will also be observed carrying out practical activities throughout the academic year.
Due to the nature of the curriculum, it is advantageous that learners possess a good level of independent living skills, in order to access the full range of opportunities this course has to offer. Learners who require support in this area may like to access our Work and Life Skills course first, with the aim of progressing to Work Skill, the following academic year.
You will want to progress into independent work. Applicants would benefit from achieving 3 GCSEs Grades E-G. Alternatively, applicants will be considered based on interview and a satisfactory skills scan.
From my Vocational Access course, I could have progressed on to courses in cookery, science or sport to a name a few, but I chose music. Having so many opportunities being given to you to pick from was brilliant. I then progressed on to Music and Performance Level 2 and Level 3. My next step is to go to university.
