Skills Competition Wales success for CAVC students

Students from Cardiff and Vale College have been celebrating success in Skills Competition Wales at rounds of the contest hosted by the College.

Cardiff and Vale College hosted the Welsh finals for the Advanced Microsoft IT Technician and Advanced Beauty Therapy rounds of Skills Competition Wales.

CAVC saw Level 3 Beauty Therapy students take all three prizes in Advanced Beauty Therapy. Alex McWhirter won the gold medal, while Aukse Antanaityte won silver and Chloe Isgrove bronze. It is the first time any of them have entered the competition.

Alex said: “I was very surprised but very happy to win the gold. The competition was very nerve-wracking but, once we got into it, it was all right.”

Aukse added: “I didn’t expect to win anything so it was a nice surprise for me. I enjoyed the competition – I’ve never done anything like it before but I found it very useful for my course and it was a good experience.”

Chloe said: “It was a real shock as I didn’t expect to do so well. It was the first time for all of us so we didn’t know what to expect and all the students from other colleges looked really good!”

The students will now compete in further regional heats ahead of WorldSkills UK. “I’m really looking forward to it now that I know what sort of thing we will be asked to do,” Alex said.

Meanwhile, Level 3 IT student James Holloway won bronze in the Advanced Microsoft IT Technician competition, which was also hosted by CAVC.

“It was such a shock – I really wasn’t expecting to win bronze,” James said. “I never win anything! I will be going to the UK competition now and I’m looking forward to it.

“I thought the competition was really good fun and I enjoyed every second of it. I’m really glad I signed up to it now.”
