Cardiff and Vale College students bring in Golden Apples for their favourite members of staff
Cardiff and Vale College students have awarded their favourite members of College staff at the first Golden Apple Awards.
The Golden Apple Awards are student-led awards for staff. There were three categories: Lecturer of the Year, Teaching Assistant of the Year and Non-Teaching Staff Member of the Year. Nominations and voting took place over Moodle, the College’s internal online community for students.
Maths Lecturer Kenny Wee won Lecturer of the Year, with more than a third of the total nominations. One of the students who nominated Kenny said: “Kenny is the best maths teacher I have ever had. I struggle with maths, but Kenny has helped me to understand it more and improve my maths scores. Our maths class is like a mini family. Kenny is wonderful and very kind with all of his pupils. He always listens to what I have to say and takes his time to help me if I have a problem.”
Nominations for Teaching Assistant of the Year were tied, so both Amy Curtis and Cerianne Thomas received the award.
“Amy is currently Cabin Crew for British Airways herself and is an inspiration to all the class,” one of Amy’s nominators said. “She tells us that we can achieve anything and really boosts our confidence in everything we do. She has helped us so much with everything and has told us lots of useful information.”
One of the students who put forward Cerianne’s name explained: “Cerianne always gives me a warm smile and she supports me when I need it. Cerianne is very supportive and a caring person and she deserves this award.”
Finally, Receptionist Maggie Cummins received the award for Non-Teaching Member of Staff of the Year Award. “Maggie is always so happy and can always put a smile on my face,” one of her student nominators said. “She makes the effort always to say hello and takes interest in what I say. A pleasure to talk to and very friendly.”
The awards were presented by Student Governors Alexis Slater and Roda Hussein at the CAVC Student Voice Conference.
The College’s Student Voice Co-ordinator Heather Ferguson said: “There were more than 100 nominations for 50 members of staff. The Golden Apple Awards have been a fantastic opportunity for the students to show their appreciation of College staff across the board – not just their lecturers but everyone who is part of the College community.”
