Cardiff and Vale College student Sion donates birthday cash to charity

Sion Charles, a Hair and Beauty student at Cardiff and Vale College, has donated all the money he raised at his 21st birthday party to the Brain Tumour Charity.

Sion has battled with some major health problems, overcoming two brain tumours – one of which he named ‘Humphrey’– and three broken vertebrae. Sion celebrated his 21st at Penarth Rugby Club and managed to raise £700 in birthday donations, which he added to himself.

Before his party, Sion came to the College’s Academi salon in Barry wearing a bright yellow top hat and refused to speak all morning but sang instead. All money raised during his morning lessons at the College were donated to Children in Need and his tutor, Helen Williams, donated a day’s wages to Sion’s fundraising.

“It’s been difficult but I like singing so I decided to do it,” Sion crooned on the day. “I’m raising this money because only around 2% of what cancer research gets goes to studying brain tumours but brain tumours are the second biggest killer cancer.”

Sion had also hired a minibus so that his College colleagues and tutor could join him at the party which featured a disco and raffle.
