Acting legend Jonathan Pryce visits CAVC to talk about his journey from Holywell to Hollywood
Welsh acting legend Jonathan Pryce recently visited Cardiff and Vale College to give a talk to Performing Arts students about his journey from Holywell to Hollywood.
Pryce, who has appeared in films such as Brazil, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Glengarry Glen Ross, Tomorrow Never Dies and Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as being an accomplished Shakespearean actor and recently playing the High Sparrow in Game of Thrones, took part in a Q&A session. Held in the theatre of the College’s City Centre Campus, the session was organised by Into Film and hosted by Bafta Cymru award winning actor/director Celyn Jones.
Addressing an audience of 50 CAVC Performing Arts students and a further 50 from local schools, the actor talked about growing up in North Wales and getting into theatre. Pryce also delivered an entertaining series of anecdotes about his life on stage and screen, and working with household names such as Terry Gilliam, Al Pacino and Martin Scorsese.
Pryce also answered questions from the audience about how his background as a Shakespearean actor influences his film work, which project he was proudest of and working with directors.
“You’ve got to work,” Pryce told the next generation of Welsh talent. “Education does matter and it helps you build your craft. After all, if you cannot read a script what can you do?”
The session was a real hit with the students who flocked down afterwards for selfies and autographs. Performing Arts student Lee Hatim said: “Such a brilliant day. I feel so motivated to follow my chosen career path as an actor after hearing the amazing words of the legend that is Jonathan Pryce – thanks for the experience!”
